This is a long trail, but there is a free shuttle that runs in the summer during the weekends and holidays. Shuttle can take 2-4 bikes via a top tube rack so mountain bikes are tricky to mount but doable. Shuttle has trailer for Kayaks and of course plenty of seats for hikers as well.
No matter which direction you start there are hill climbs, we took a shuttle from Milford to Hialeah (unscheduled stop on the road) trailhead, about 200 yards from the road.
Trail is loose, rocky gravel when accounting for varying terrain, climbs and many bridge transitions (over 20 bridges), wide tires and mountain bike low gearing is what I would recommend. There are 2 steep downhills heading from Hialeah that have speed bumps on them to watch out for as they can throw you off balance.
