The Delaware Botanic Gardens has a newly installed prairie design by Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf, the same superstar designer for the High Line in New York City and two gardens in Chicago (and famous gardens all over Europe). Switch grasses in shades of green, blue and purple provide the unifying back drop for the other plants. There are gently meandering paths leading the visitor through and around the garden. The day we visited, ongoing work in other areas of the facility limited our access to the woods so we didn't see much other than the Oudolf garden. Much of the installation and maintenance is done by volunteers. There is a modest entrance fee and the garden may not be open every day - check the website for hours. We hope to come back every season - Oudolf plans for his designs to offer different experiences...
