Stayed in the park in Cabin D - pet friendly. Cabin was roomy enough and had electric outlets, overhead lamp and fan, and a wall unit A/C. Two plastic chairs on the front porch along with picnic table, fire ring and charcoal grill outside. Inside were one full size cot and a set of twin bunk beds. If you go, consider an air mattress on top of what is there - the mattresses are super thin and underneath them is a wooden slab. Maybe ok for one night, or more if you are under 30 years old... not the best for 3 nights. Take a folding table for inside the cabin - there is nowhere to put anything except on the bunks or the floor. A small lamp would help too for bedside.
Self serve firewood (don't bring your own to a state park!) but not much else. "Camp Store" was only open Friday evening and Saturday and it is a very small shed - not sure what they have. No coffee available without driving a few miles, but there is a soda vending machine at the bathhouse. The bathrooms and showers were much nicer than I expected. Clean and well stocked with tp and liquid soap at the sinks.
We enjoyed hiking the trails in the park, although some at the south end (Valley Trail) were not well maintained. Wound up over knee deep in unknown greenery part way through and there is plenty of poison ivy, etc. (I am trying not to scratch as I type this, actually...)
Wear long pants, use the Deet heavily, and don't stand in grass too long. There are mosquitos and chiggers aplenty, and you won't know they've got you until they've got you...
If you have forgotten something important, never fear - there is a Super Walmart in Denton about 15 minutes away. In the strip mall next to them is Sal's Pizza and Pasta ---...
Read moreMy wife and I were looking for a place to camp for a couple of nights while we ventured out to the Kent Narrows for some famous Maryland Blue Crab. The park was very well maintained and all of the staff that we met were very helpful. The camp sites are spread out enough to create a semi-private feel. Our site was perfectly level and setting up was easy. On the first night, much to our surprise, Ranger Jessica Conley was walking through the campground with a live Red Tail Hawk in hand. This was not only a delightful aspect of our visit, as she explained about their rescue program and invited us to their aviary tour on Saturday, but Ranger Conley was professional, well informed and presented herself as a great ambassador for the park service. We were busy eating crab during the tour, so we missed the opportunity. However, we did see Ranger Conley again as we were leaving - two times. First, she suggested a great place to get crabs to go, and second, when we saw her getting out of her patrol truck to pick up a scattered bag of rubbish that had been dropped on Cherry Lane. We slowed down to say goodbye as we were leaving, saddened by the mess in such a pretty place. Ranger Conley exited to clean up the mess with gloved hands, a trash bag and a smile and simply commented "I don't want us to have a dirty park". I must say that few people would have been so enthusiastic about cleaning up someone's garbage. Her actions are a testament to the dedication of the staff at this park, who all made us feel quite welcome. We will definitely return again someday. Hopefully...
Read moreMy wife, daughter and I had a lovely couple of days here. I've taken off a star because when we got to our site (site 29), there was a gasoline odor that would not go away for our entire stay, and I could not locate the source of it. I spoke with the ranger about it, but he was not overly helpful. He assured me that there were no gas lines for hot water in the area, and that was about it. Aside from this, no complaints. The bathrooms are buggy (as is the campground in general), but well kept. In fact, this is the only state park I've been to where there are two cleanings per day. As mentioned, the campground in general is pretty buggy, have repellent with you. We were bitten up pretty good, I suspect by no see ums, in spite of having repellent on. It is part of camping though. Good hiking, with several trails to choose from, although there is a fair amount of tree damage in some places you have to navigate around. Beautiful lake, two play areas for kids including one that is made of recycled tires. Adkins Arboretum is just a couple minutes away, and was a fun way to spend a few hours, although we suspect its at its best in spring when things are flowering. Campground was fairly empty, so if you like solitude camp during the week. We will definitely...
