When Slartibartfast was designing Carhenge, during a moment of intense concentration he absentmindedly pressed his resting elbow too hard on a portion of Iowa creating a little low lying area in the center of Des Moines, notorious for flooding. More spacious than Central Park, and once home to the Hinterland festival, it exists as both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. Stand by... In the evening of November 22, 1963, Wendell Watterwurks (original lead singer of the pop band Tears for Fears) was wandering the boardwalk along the shore of the the 102 river in Maryville, Missouri, when he received a text message. Fraught with blandness after learning of the death of Aldous Huxley, Watterwurks nimbly fell into the glacial runoff, never to be seen alive again. The body never recovered (and his soul inhabited a talking Tina doll until 3955 when a cobalt bomb destroyed Earth), but the search along the river lead to the discovery of what is now referred to as Waterworks Park. Local Des Moinians don’t like the name as they believe it is a jab at their regional trait of incontinence when frightened, but now you know, The Rest Of The Story.

We went to the Lantern Festival, It was so a beautiful night, and an experience. I would not recommend it because there was food options of Mexican, Mexican or Mexican food. No Lid friendly options. NO COMMUNICATION!! We spent one hour trying to find where to go? The attendants were CLUELESS. This resulted in us looking for over an hour. The DSM Symphony about a mile and a half prior to the lantern fest had a beverage tent and plenty of food trucks with a huge variety. Oh, and FREE parking. We had to exit, drive all the way around and then saw Pay! No communication, zero organization and for a substantial amount.

This park is quite large, right Des Moines full of nature and a few trails with the river running through it. It has a new amphitheater and biergarten next to it. The biergarten is open in the nice weather season and is very relaxing.Take your lawn chairs and relax in this large park, bigger then NYC Central Park. There's not a lot of picnic tables but a lovely natural setting. There's a small playground near the amphitheater.

This is a very special place in Des Moines as it can be many things to many different people. Long walks, stress relief, back to nature, enjoy the lake, meet other people, ride your bike, do some kayaking, walk your dog, sit and relax, have a picnic, watch the sunrise or sunset, do a little fishing, have a party, or enjoy some local music. You can enjoy many things at no cost, all you need to do is show up.

We had a wonderful time at Water Works Park! There are lots of fun trails to hike on, and lots of paved bike paths too. We had our 4 and 2 yr olds with us and they loved exploring. We participated in the Eggstraordinary clean up event, and found several stunning glass eggs. Go like the water works park facebook page so you don't miss out on next years glass egg hunt!
