Tippy Dam Pond is an amazing escape. There aren't any houses on this body of water, and only a couple camp grounds. It's very serene, and usually relatively calm even when it's windy, due to being much lower than the shoreline.
If you look at the picture of my fish graph, there are tons of submerged trees, as tall as 25 feet in this body of water. You'll want to take your time learning it if you're fishing. It seems you can go on plane in a boat if you're near the middle of the body of water. But be cautious. Near shore you'll want to idle/tell very slow.
If you're fishing, be prepared to lose fishing tackle. The submerged trees make trolling a chore. There are the basic panfish, pike, cat fish and walleye in here, but we didn't try for much else.
There is a launch off Robinson Road, down Tippy Dam Road, going north off of M55 just west mmm east of Wellston. It's an excellent launch, but you'll need good trailer handling skills as the launch is steep. There's a fire pit right at the water's edge you enjoy a fire while kayaking or boating. Plenty of parking.
As of July 26, 2018, BE CAREFUL OF THE LEFT DOCK!! It isn't installed properly, and as soon as you step foot on it, it shifts. Otherwise it's a great launch.
Go and enjoy this place! It's an escape from the busy lakes of Michigan, and a must see, especially for kayaking...

Lots of hiking trails, back country camping, fishing on the Manistee River all the way through to Tippy Dam Pond and down to Lake Michigan. Hodenpyl and Tippy Ponds are backwater lakes owned by Consumers Power. The State DNR has camping areas that can be reserved. It's all primitive camping. Nature at its best. Very quiet. Warning... Do not hike here without a compass and good outdoor skills. It could days...
