Wisdom Ranger District Poor land management!! We have visited many national forests in the U.S. But, this forest seems to be managed the worst, by far. Twenty years ago, we loved camping and mountain biking here. But the utter decline of the forest health (acres and acres of dying trees, huge fires...) and lack of management is extremely disappointing and sad. Recently we hoped to mountain bike three trails off of the Trail Creek Road: Hogan Creek trail, Elk Creek Trail and the Neemepoo Trail. Wow! There was no trailhead sign along the Trail Creek Road for either Hogan Creek or Neemepoo. And, the Elk Creek Trailhead sign was old and difficult to find. And the condition of the forest is appalling. As professional foresters, it appears to us that there is NO forest management here. And, obviously, the USFS is not too good at putting wildfires out! Terrible! Perhaps harvesting dying timber and aggresively addressing the insect problems would be beneficial! Perhaps the USFS is trying to discourage the tax-paying public from recreating in this once-beautiful area. Who really wants to camp in a charred, poorly managed and neglected...

Absolutely beautiful and pictures just can't do this place justice. I cobbled together photos that all the family took and we just had an awesome time exploring this place. Montana in the summer is something to behold and we just love it here at this time of year. We are going to come back here sometime for sure, but even just spending one day trekking around is something we will remember for ages.

Even my young children were enthralled and they are usually not very impressed by a lot of nature. The river, the mountains, the fields, all of it are just perfect. I almost always give state parks 5 stars and this will be another one. It's just hard to dock these places unless they are horribly unkempt and spoiled which i've yet to run into especially in Montana.

Please visit here if you're ever in Montana I guarantee you will not regret it in...

Traveled the Pioneer Mountains Scenic By-Way in August, from south to the north. So beautiful! Spent the morning fishing the Big Hole River then drove south and connected to the Byway. Classic setting the whole way, including a stunning little rest stop where we had lunch, complete with a cabin and a view of the Byway to match. Like, take me back to the 60’s classic views of our national forests from the road. What a special experience. Thanks to our Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF.

I have been visiting the upper Ruby range in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge national forest for 52 years. The Grizzly bears and wolf packs have decimated the deer and elk herds to almost nonexistent. The relocation of both grizzlies and wolves from Yellowstone Park have had a dramatic impact on all the wildlife. You don't see or hear coyotes or foxes and badgers. The grouse are gone as well as many other bird species. It's sad to see this once thriving wilderness now empty of wildlife.
