This is a large park with 3 campground areas. It’s large and we were able to walk the entire place on most days. However, if you are not really a heavy walker you might want to do this park in shifts. We stayed in the Wilkins Creek area which had all pull-thru sites. It was an easy walk from our site to the bathroom/shower area as well as the dump station. The bathrooms were clean. We did not use the showers as we easily walked our portable tank to the dump station and showered in our Motorhome. The bathrooms only had one shower stall each, which we found odd for such a large campground. There was a trailhead for the White Oak Ridge trail right at our site and connected to all the trails on that side of the park. The blackberries were just starting to ripen, so we took advantage and had several for breakfast one morning. We walked every trail and they were mostly dry, but the bugs were terrible. The Terrace Trail was under water at the point it meets the Arrowhead Trail, so we were not able to complete that circuit. We did a fun and informative hike with Caroline on the Volksmarch Trail. She told us all about the fascinating world of woodpeckers. It was outstanding to learn so much about these birds and their role as keystone animals to so many habitats. All the other staff members were great too. One point I want to make; they have 4 really nice horseshoe pits in this campground!! We love to play and was thrilled to find pits here. Bring your own shoes if you...
Read moreI went at the beginning of September and bought a years membership. I set my first trot line there in the Stumps. My Uncle Roger showed me from beginning to end. I fished there the last time with my daddy before he passed away. My Uncle Roger, Uncle Johnny and my Daddy picked me up at the dock. The night before I went to a club with my friend and had to much to handle. Wife up with the most horid hangover. Called my Dadsy because I was supposed to be there 20 minutes already he told me we'll it's to late now. I begged him, cried. Went to the dock and called him back. He answered and he was giving me a bad time And I said while sobbing, please please come back. Then I I heard laughing, all 3 were in the boat in the lake around about and he said look up honey and there were. I was still weeping, snot flowing down uncontrollably. I was so happy. See Daddy would drive to see me almost 4 hours one way each year and I would drive down once a year. But our fishing trips were special. I got in the boat, wheezy. Waited my hook and hung over the side and could not hold back the vomiting. Uncle Johnny said "well that's some good chum" Already 2 more times. I leaned on my daddy's shoulder put my finger on my line fir a bite. That's pretty much it. Grown woman. I will never forget it. I love you...
Read moreJust wrapped up a 2 night stay for Labor Day weekend. We were at site 38 in the Wilkins Creek camping area and were tent camping. Our site was spacious and clean (it is adjacent to one of the trails so if people walking right up on your site makes you uncomfortable, choose a different site). The shower house was clean with 1 shower stall (curtain not door) and 2 toilets. We notice that park officials drove by quite often which made us feel very safe.
The staff was super friendly. They helped us get checked in quickly and were helpful with renting kayaks. While we were there, the store had a trailer of firewood to use for a small donation to the park.
Kayaks were affordable and in good condition, for the half day rental, we were able to explore the cove near the boat ramp and do some fishing. If you do the Arrowhead trail, I recommend a packable chair to sit and enjoy the lake views!
All in all, this is everything I look for in a park. It was clean, safe and well maintained. Trails are clearly marked and the swimming beach looked nice, though we did not spend time there. The only thing I wish there was more of is access to the lake for bank fishing. There really is only one main area near the boat ramp. There also is not ice available at the camp store, which would have saved us a...
