When former governor John McKithen, (I hope I spelled that right), first ran for the governor’s seat, he campaigned heavily on the fact that the span had halted its construction leaving it half-finished. He used a TV ad that highlighted the construction’s predicament in an attempt to probably attack the former governor’s failure to finish the bridge. It comically opened the ad with the words…..”This is the Sunshine Bridge. You’ll notice that one end of the bridge leads to nowhere.” He sounded like a political hack and I don’t believe he ever knew how corny it came across to the viewing public.
