A captivating veiw from the "Top of The World" both day and night. I spent quite a few days, and nights here, photographing the magnificent landscape, and the captivating stary night sky, a must see during the "New Moon phase". The morning sunrise as low lying fog in fills the valleys with the mtn tops peaking through, will leave you awestruck. This can be seen every morning from August, to November, as fall brings the cooler air to the region. Also, late winter in March through May, as warmer air moves in, through spring. The road up to the top is a rough ride, and the dirt road is narrow, so please be courteous to other tourists coming and going. The road is good enough to take a car up, though a slow ride is required in both car or truck. Also be aware at night, as you pull into the parking lot, of photographer's that are photographing the night sky, as bright lights are a nuisance to the cameras. Once your eyes are adjusted to the dark, you need no light to see, though a red lighted head lamp is best to use, as it does not affect the eyes, in darkness. It's not a rule or law like it is at Cherry Springs State Park, it is just a courtesy to others who are there to veiw, and photograph the night sky. Please be courteous. Read moreBeautiful spot on a bald in the Allegheny plateau. The road up is narrow and bumpy. You don't need an off-road vehicle but I wouldn't try to get a sedan up there unless you're feeling particularly brave or dumb. Be courteous to your fellow drivers and keep an eye for spots to pull over just in case you encounter someone going the opposite way.
Once you're at the top it's a wonderful view in two directions. If you find yourself up there alone, you might feel as if youre the only soul in Appalachia.
At night it sits in a hole in the light pollution that blankets the east so you can see a spectacular amount of stars. If you're going to stay up there at night, know there are no restrooms up there and please bring a red light for the comfort of anyone...
Read moreOutstanding views, particularly in Autumn. The road up can be a bit rough, so an SUV or truck would be safer. A sedan could make it, but only one with high ground clearance. There are a couple of trails from the viewpoint. As I arrived at late afternoon, and was losing the light, decided against even a short hike. Would advise visiting in the morning during Autumn to maximise light. It's a good 30 minutes drive up the dirt road from...
