Recent storms have lots of downed trees/debris over the trail, so pick up your feet. Otherwise great option. For a bike trail or on foot. Cool tunnel & rugged climb to the peak if you are an able body. Well-groomed otherwise & wide (less ticks!) trail, lots of wildlife & distance options. The trails could be better marked with "you are here" on the guide maps, but a tiny bit of orientation & you are good. Don't forget your bug spray & don't be shy to mushroom hunting in the area. Lots of trilliums in spring! There are climbers attachments all along the tunnel & Elys Peak, don't forget your fairy dust.

Climbed Ely's peak with my son and grandson on a sunny Saturday afternoon in November. Lots of other people out hiking. Fun section of Superior Hiking trail with good views. Would be gorgeous with fall leaves but we were too late for that. Still pretty. Medium difficulty hike. My Grandson was excited to see a train right after we parked. Good day.

Also known as Ely's Peak. A fabulous hiking spot. Not too long or challenging but gives an excellent reward at the top. I take my 5 and 9 year old here all the time. They don't care for nature walks but they'll gladly come here.

What a place!! Though I found very little information anywhere about this place I found it on google maps. (Side note, if you like to explore new locations start your trip with google maps.) we parked in the elys peak parking lot and hiked up the stairs and then hiked the rather short distance on the DWP trail and there was the tunnel. Very awesome. We went December 7th and it was pretty chilly but worth with the bundling up. For someone from Minnesota who has never hiked in the mountains I really felt like I was in a mountain. I’ve been all over Minnesota but I find that the topography and geology of the Lake Superior area to be awe inspiring and should be visited at least once by every Minnesotan. If your making the trip I recommend jay cook state park as a place to camp as well as hike and is only about a ten min drive. Happy holidays and...

At first you walk on this beautiful little boardwalk which is there for springtime flooding. Then you get to a staircase that reminds you of Stairs of Cirith Ungol from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and you think to yourself that maybe you and Frodo don’t need to destroy the ring and should just go back to the shire and that reminds you of the cute little boardwalk you were just on that clearly lulled you into a false sense of security for what you got yourself into.

However, if you manage summon enough courage to get to the top, you will be rewarded. The trail is smooth just like railroad tracks and super easy to walk. Great for those with littles, those with doggos, for those who cycle, and those with limited mobility, assuming that they have helpers to get up the...
