This place is is worth a luksi! It is free for tribal members and 3&under with many discounts. The grounds are well manicured while staying true to the prairie it sits within.
There is a large outdoor space to explore or catch a stickball game. The inside is immaculate and welcoming. There are exhibits that speak to the terrible past events that brought the tribe to Oklahoma but does not dwell. Instead the majority focus is on how the indigenous Choctaw peoples are not a relic of a bygone time but a living and thriving nation.
If you are planning on visiting and grabbing lunch somewhere else, I recommend checking out the Café before you make plans. The Café had many traditional foods made in modern ways. I was surprised that they bring your drinks to your table and refill them as you eat. When ready, you pick up your meal at the counter. It comes out on attractive plates with metal cutlery and cloth napkins. Don't let this scare you off. It shows how much pride is taken in the preparation. While there are plenty of upscale dinner style meals, there are plenty of indulgent foods like Indian tacos, fried pies, and pulled pork sandwiches. I loved the Tanchi Labona (hominy and pork) with fry bread. My toddler loved the Gelato.
My toddler also enjoyed the exhibits and the play place. The play place is a full sized indoor playground. There are coloring stations, puppet shows, readings, and more. Even if you don't have kids with you it is worth checking out the giant...
Read moreThis museum offers a wealth of information that was presented in a very beautiful way. If you plan on going to this museum, I recommend that you get there as soon as they open so that you have enough time to fully enjoy the experience. There is so much to learn at this museum that my family and I could not finish it all in one day. 😍
They are always offering something unique every week, whether that is cultural exhibits or special menu items. 😋The first time I visited this museum, they did a stickball demonstration and they had a pottery class. The special menu item that week was the honey pepper chicken with mac & cheese. I also recommend the lavender lemonade. (It is just as delightful as it sounds.)
I would recommend this for something fun to do on the weekends, during spring break or summer break, and for school field trips. It is the perfect place to complete a weekend getaway if you are staying at the nearby casino. If you have young children they have a playground area near the entrance.
This is the perfect museum! You will not be...
Read moreWe had a great visit. My husband is Choctaw and always had questions that this place answered. We spent 4 hours there and didn’t get to do everything. We’ll go back in the fall when it’s cooler to do the outdoorsy things and things we missed. Clean, modern and very accessible for everyone. Wheel chair Ramps, sub titles on videos and benches throughout. Our favorite part was the creation story cave. You could get through it much quicker I think but we purposely took our time. My 14 year old son really enjoyed it. The staff were great, Choctaw tribe members get in free. The cafe food was fine, not great but good. My son was disappointed in his three small chicken strips on his plate. They also didn’t have the lemonade made that was on the...
