the temp was hovering around 32 and after 30 minutes snow and ice began to sprinkle the landscape. some trees still held on to their last colored fans, but most were already on the ground. the trail was muddy in places, but manageable, although an hour or so into it ice started to glisten it's winter welcome; caution is definitely warranted. the serene silence on this trail is amazing and the changing sunlight provides a wonderful display of shadow and light on the landscape. higher up the trail got too icy, so we turned back, but that welcomes a return in warmer weather.
note that the road to the car park, maybe 4 miles worth, is not paved; it is manageable in a small, non 4 wheel drive under dry conditions, but watch out...
Read moreGreat hike surprisingly few bugs empty parking lot starting in the am, full at end of day and people were in the overflow lot. Summit was clear and marked to preserve the vegetation. Dogs have to be leashed on the summit. Took the alpine trail down which was clearly less used than Monroe and saw the remnants of the B-24 crash.
There were a few spots with running water for the dog...

It took my husband and I a little over 6 hours to complete start to finish but we took our time and stopping alot on thw accent. NOT KID FRIENDLY if u take the long trail you are scaling some steep rocks throughout the 3.5 mile hike to the summit but boy did it make me cry from the sheer...
