A place to fill up your nostalgia tank.
In a small town off the highway sits a relic frozen in time. One untouched by changing fads and evolving architect. That relic is Ambler’s Texaco Gas Station. This gas station is not just a blast from the past but one you can also visit while you cruise down Route 66. This just what happened for my father and I, but under different circumstances.
For years, my father and I would partake in a 5k obstacle course called the Warrior Dash. On our way from the dash, we would stop at Old Route 66 Family Restaurant to refuel ourselves after a muddy good time. In 2016, I took a detour in getting to our food destination and happened to notice this gas station. While we got food, I looked up the gas station in question and was surprised to see it is a historic site. After our delicious late lunch, we had a pit stop at Ambler’s before heading home.
As we pulled up to the gas station, it felt like a blast to the past. Like living a scene from a period movie. We walked around and snapped a few photos while checking out the way things were forever ago. As we were doing this, there was an older gentleman who approached us and asked how we were doing. In making small talk, we learned that this man was the one who manned the station and talked to visitors about the gas station. He spent about 10 minutes telling us about the gas station and the history surrounding it and other things in the area. We got to walk around inside and that, too, was a snapshot to another era.
Since we just ran a 5k obstacle course, we were tired and still coated in fragments of mud. We thanked the gentleman for the mini tour and headed out. One thing I asked before leaving was if they sold gas as we had a 2.5 hour drive ahead of us. Unfortunately, they were more like a museum than an actual gas station. I was hoping to fuel up there to give them some business, but alas, they took a cash donation from me instead.
Places like these are awesome, in my opinion. They give people who weren’t around a glimpse at what life was like back in the day. They let people who were around back then have a nice nostalgia trip down memory lane. Or, if you are an antique gas station enthusiast, this place will scratch your needs as well. Please visit these places and offer them a small donation as these places are becoming more rare and will literally become...

We had the pleasure of meeting fellow travelers who were also enjoying their journey along Route 66. It was wonderful to share stories and experiences with others who were equally excited about the adventure. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, despite it being a Sunday afternoon when the store was quite busy.
Overall, Ambler's Texaco offered not just great photo opportunities but also a warm, friendly environment that added a special touch to our trip. We left with a sense of nostalgia and a few more stories to tell about our Route...
Read moreThis was our first stop on our Route 66 Tour. It was late April, so the station wasn't open. We were satisfied to just look into the windows and listen to the recorded description.
Just as we were getting ready to leave a car pulled in. Jack, one of the volunteers, saw us and came to give us a personal and very thorough tour of the station. Jack made it so much fun and very interesting. He also suggested several other not to miss sights in Dwight. Thank you Jack for a great...
