1.09 Billion year old basalt similar to current Hawaiian lava ooze; weathered by ravages of both harsh winters and the deepest of the Great Lakes. Wear decent shoes for scrambling the 40 ft. high rock formations' 1933 WPA-Project hewn stone stairways. Outhouses are wheelchair accessible but very primitive. The drives along M-26 from Eagle River, JamPot, and Eagle Harbor, as well as US41 from Copper Harbor to Phoenix are serpentine and scenic.
