1.09 Billion year old basalt similar to current Hawaiian lava ooze; weathered by ravages of both harsh winters and the deepest of the Great Lakes. Wear decent shoes for scrambling the 40 ft. high rock formations' 1933 WPA-Project hewn stone stairways. Outhouses are wheelchair accessible but very primitive. The drives along M-26 from Eagle River, JamPot, and Eagle Harbor, as well as US41 from Copper Harbor to Phoenix are serpentine and scenic.

Esrey Park or Great Sand Bay are our obligatory stop to savor the just-acquired goodies from The Jampot at nearby...

Esrey Park is a great place to have a picnic or just enjoy great views of Lake Superior. Although we had driven past this spot a number of times we had never stopped until one of the kids and her husband were was with us. I decided to climb to the top to take a photo of Lake Superior. What I saw with my own eyes is transferred to the photo I took. This is not a smeared camera lens. It appears to be a cloud forming over the lake. I've never seen anything like this...

This is a wonderful stop along M-26. There is a bathroom, a few picnic tables, and spots to grill. We always stop here to enjoy the views and for a bit of rock picking. Lake Superior Agates can be found right here on this rocky beach, which makes it a little rock hound dream. You can get in the water here if you want to, but Lake Superior is cold...

This was a fun little place to stop and search for agates! I didn’t find any, but a family member did, and the search was just as fun as finding one. It was a good spot to dip our toes into Lake Superior as well. It’s a nice little rocky beach area with a few picnic tables, a spot to grill, and a bathroom.
