(Here's a secret tip for you: if you want to see "Song of the South" which has been suppressed by Disney, you can buy the DVD here.) I saw it as a child and loved it. The songs, the mixed live and animation, Uncle Remus. The first movie in which an African American won an Oscar, and well deserved.
Disney has refused to release it on the grounds that it is pretty darned racist. And it is. And that's worth a debate. This movie should be watched.
According to Song of the South reality, rich white folks suffer terribly with marital difficulties and with being forced to live in mansions and wear velvet suits and lace collars and being made fun of by the other kids. But the black folks are right there, waiting in their unheated, unplumbed shacks to love the white folks and make everything okay again. So I think it's a very realistic and happy story.
That said, James Baskett as Uncle Remus is wonderful. He was the first person to act with animated characters, and he was amazing. The music is wonderful. And if we suppress history - in this case the presented image of the roles in mid-20th century America of blacks and whites, we forget where we came from, and the work we need to do in our assumptions and attitudes.
