I visited Rock Eagle 50 years ago. The gathering was headed by Rolling Thunder an important person, some said medicine man, of the Ogallala Souix. There were 100 or so attending. He asked all the Indians to join in a circle inside the fence holding hands. I deferred later to find Indians consider all people Indians.

The stones showed chisel scars as they lead around the tall chain linked fence surrounding the effigy. The massive pile of stones within the fence suggested no particular shape except perhaps a wing. The area has an 8โ high fence around it but there is a nice tower, built as a WPA project, gives you an excellent view of the eagle. Parking and signage is great. The site is open and free. Interestingly Pulitzer Prize author Alice Walker worked at the site and write a poem about the site (see silver plaque). The walkway is pretty uneven, so folks that have trouble walking will need...
