Coyote spotted on October 23rd, 2025. My Red Heeler would sometimes walk with her tail between her legs, so I guess I know why now. If you are bringing children, be aware of your surroundings. I only spotted the Coyote because I had seen the Cottontail it was hunting.

Other animals spotted: Cottontail rabbits, Woodpeckers, Kiskadees, Variety of (very cool, sometimes larger)Lizards, Butterflies, and Dragonflies. Also some bird of prey, possibly a Broad-winged hawk.

I’d assume there are snakes, but I haven’t spotted one yet.

If you like Camp McAllen, also check out the McAllen Nature center. Main differences: No pets at the Nature Center. Also, always bring a friend to the Nature Center for safety because it is more secluded and less public-facing.

Bring your own dog poop bags. There are 3 stations that provide bags at the park, but none are at the parking lot/entrance, so your dog may do their business before you see one. These dog bag stations are also not marked on the maps provided on the trails.

Also, dogs on leashes recommended, especially if your dog is excitable. There is dense cactus at certain points of the trail and there can be spiked debris on or very close to the trail because of it. Use leashes to protect your animals from the environment and themselves, please.

All-in-all. I like the place. Never...

They actually close the park at 7:00pm. Google hours are incorrect. I was very saddened by this park. It needs A LOT of work. They need to plant some trees, shrubs or flowers. The maps tell you "you're here" without really telling you on the map where you're at LOL. The lake is very stagnant and it smells very fishy in the trails close by the water. Maybe if you like to fish, but I don't remember seeing any type of cover around that area, you might like it as it's quiet. There's a section you can get onto a canoe, so maybe if you like that, this is an ok place. The canoing at Tres Lagos seems way more fun. Hopefully with time they can put in some of our tax dollars into making it a very nice place. Until then, more than likely won't be back. If you take dogs or kids, beware as there's a lot of cactus next to the trails. I would recommend Quinta Mazatlan if you're looking for...

Really beautiful campsite with multiple activities available to the public. Kayaking, archery, fishing, BBQ pits, and walking trails etc. This campsite also includes an office where you can rent everything you need to enjoy the activities available, as well they have a snack shop available. It has free public parking although the parking lot is limited in space. However this place is wonderful for everyone to enjoy from family time, a date at the park or simply to enjoy a nice...

Awesome spot. I know they just opened and there might be more coming soon IDK. Came to camp McAllen for the bike portion. Wasn’t worth it at this time. All traffic is stuck to the marked trails. Good for a slow (very slow) bike ride. I hope there’s a Mtb trail in the works. It would add to this already awesome park.
