My time here was mostly pleasant. The price per day for a primitive campsite located on the lakefront was only $25. The checkout time was a cozy 5:00 in the afternoon. The quality of the campgrounds and lake themselves were fine. It all was about as clean as one would realistically hope for. Some garbage blown in and around by the wind is unavoidable, and groundskeepers seem to do a good job of disposing of what little there is. The shorelines had a refreshing lack of broken glass and dead, decaying fish, which is more than I can say for some other lakes I've been to in recent years (Looking at you, Lake Meredith in the Texas panhandle). There wasn't a burn ban even though the wildfire risk was considered moderately high at the point in time, which was nice. Firewood is sold on site, though I'm unsure of the cost. We bought ours elsewhere beforehand.
The absolute biggest negative here is that this place is located so close next to town. This means obnoxious, inconsiderate riffraff is bound to be a problem from time to time. During our Friday to Monday stay, all was fine except on Saturday, when our campsite had the misfortune of being located between two others that were occupied by loud, partying twenty-somethings who blared their music and shouted to one another until they eventually drunkenly passed out a few hours before dawn. At one point around 3:00 in the morning at one of these neighboring campsites, a bit of a kerfuffle broke out between a few of these people. This naturally lead to one of them bragging about having a loaded gun on them, along with their total lack of any issue with using it to violently end their petty argument if that's what it came down to, which it thankfully didn't. Just charming behavior all around while you're trying to sleep in a tent thirty feet away. Other than these societal bottom feeders, we camped near pleasant families and people whose campsites were ghost towns outside of normal sleeping hours due to them being out boating or whatever.
But yeah, by all means, camp here. Just keep the number for the local police department on hand in case you get stuck...
Read moreWhile the camping spot we had was beautiful I noticed A LOT of sick deer within the park. Their ears so covered in ticks that they couldn't move them. A baby with an infected eye and multiple deer that were extremely skinny. I witnessed sick and injured squirrels as well. The water has just become filthy. Staff harassed us about our dogs being off leash when they remained on tieouts the entire time we were there. They never once roamed off leash yet, we had little dogs from other campsites walking up to us multiple times. No leash, no owner. The owner only called them back once they noticed them missing. They tried to get onto us for our dogs barking but they only barked when other dogs were also barking. They also never made a sound during quiet hours. We were harassed by other guests at the lake continuously asking when we were leaving so they could take the spot we were in. I stayed there for 5 days paying $30 a night and was very disappointed with how we were treated. I grew up coming to this lake but I don't believe we will be...
Read moreDifficult to pay ahead for spaces, have to pay the day you call until date u leave, that can b 2 months if u like to plan ahead. Could get noone to answer to report a big black dog in sun w humongous chain was being abused. I have camped at Lake Thunderbird an Lake Murray over 30 times in 6 years and NEVER have had anything stolen. Labor day weekend had expensive sledge hammer for husbands work, new waterproof bags, camper tire stop, an 3 other things stolen right off campsite and vehicles friday an Saturday night. Also heard multi gunshots close an next day found shells by beach w orange floats. Not sure will camp here anytime soon as u cannot leave anything out. Only saw police once, saw no rangers or lake employees patrolling area, at other lakes always saw someone. Campsites were nice. Some had more parking designated than others like 222 should have number moved to in front of that camp sight as they can fit 5 cars and allow 223 to have at...
