Another amazing dinosaur museum! This museum, though tiny, boasts a cast of Wyrex the T-Rex that greets you when you first walk into the museum section. Not behind anything, you can get up close and personal to grasp its sheer size. They had a great variety of fossils and animals all with plaques full of information. Not many museums give me that feeling of being absolutely puny next to these things, but this one did and it was awesome. They also have non-dinosaur fossils and casts which is always fun to learn about in addition. They even had a stuffed wolf, that admittedly, I thought was a recreation of a Dire Wolf until I read the info and learned it was from this century!! Whew! And don't get me started on the gift shop which I'm always a sucker for. They had great t-shirts and so many dinosaur figures, including a more accurate version of a Spinosaurus!

Imagine a town of 290 people in what is arguably in the middle of nowhere in eastern Montana and discovering an outstanding museum. Here it is! The Carter County Museum has an impressive collection of historical artifacts, dinosaurs and and local objects that will keep you fascinated. The staff is friendly and the museum is free. We stopped here taking the scenic route from Roosevelt NP to Devil's Tower, but it is well worth a side trip if you're in the area. The Midway Motel is close by and the excellent Wagon Wheel Cafe is right across the way. Add this to your road trip plans.

Carter County Museum in Ekalaka, MT is a great place to stop and take a step back in time!! It is fun to see the local and natural history exhibits, including a Bronc Rider memorial. The museum is also on the Montana Dinosaur Trail with a great paleontology collection. Easy parking, no fee—donations welcome.

We came here after visiting Devil's Tower in WY, about a 2 hour trip without much scenery (but lots of wide open spaces!). This jewel of a small museum in the very small town of Ekalaka provides a few rooms of interesting exhibits. You probably won't spend more than 45 minutes or an hour here, but during that time you'll get an overview of the history of the area, geology, and other topics -- but the best part is for sure the dinosaurs. Stop by the gift shop on the way out for some reasonably-priced souvenirs... oh, and drop some money in the donation box on...
