A really small Kansas State Park with unique rock formations along a couple of walking paths near the road. Although we would never go back, if in the area, it is worth the fifteen minutes it takes to view the formations.
There is a parking lot with enough space for about five vehicles (no one else was there when we were there) including a handicap space with a concrete walkway to a shade structure. There was also restroom facilities on site.
We took the south path first. Shortly after crossing a bridge, there were a few formations. The Devil's Oven was probably the most unique of all the formations. The texture, the holes within the shape. Very unique. Nearby was the the famous Mushroom Rock. It looks better from afar. Being up close, you see all the graffiti carved and/or painted on the formation. In addition, there are little signs naming the formations that affect photo angles.
The north side formations included the Pulpit Rock. We didn't think it was as impressive as those on the south side of the road.
Overall, worth the visit as we were in the area. A little disappointing, but a decent little photo...
Read moreCool little place. Unless you're a regional local or are passing through the area, you may not find the stop overwhelmingly worthwhile. I've been a couple times over the years and would suggest a visit if you've the time and interest. There are several "climb-friendly" outcroppings and formations that kids and ambitious adults can enjoy. There are a couple of bathrooms on site (didn't check them out) and some walking trails. There are "rocks" on both the North and South sides of the main road so, if you've made it there, be sure to visit both areas. The main formations show years of visitor etchings (vandalism) but they aren't too distracing. Actually, many folks may find them interesting. Either way, it's unnecessary and, I'll say it, selfish and indulgent. Anywho, watch out for Poison Ivy as it is present throughout the area. Some is on/next to the rocks themselves. Today, when my family and I visited, we were lucky to see numerous Six-Lined Racerunners and even a Horned Toad/Lizard which we caught and released. A quick 30 minutes can get you through the site but more time can certainly be...
Read moreWow! So glad we drove out here. The dirt road was a little slick after 3 big thunderstorms, but the scenery and smell were great. There's fly-infested pit toilets, no water. Small parking space, but easy to find a spot by road. We had it all to ourselves. The obvious mushroom has lovely "hoodoo" rocks nearby. Walk up the hill behind for the view. Please don't deface the rock....it looks like folks have done that for ages. Cross the road and the bridge, wander the trail ahead of you...another mushroom and some of the most spectacular rocks ever will appear.
The layers, holes, and arrangement of these stones are impressive. Wish they were in my backyard!
There's an explanatory sign, one of the "Brown" ones, which has been edited (wisely) by someone. A sturdy, shaded bench doesn't give much of a view,...
