Lousiest snowboard experience in New England by far. Website advertises late season rate, $25 for an adult day ticket. However, when we arrived at the mountain it turned out to be $35 per ticket. Had we known that, we would have gone to a different resort. The staff selling the tickets was borderline rude and clearly did not want to be there.
This is not a snowboard friendly resort. To exit the only chairlift one needs to go down a very steep and high sloop to get onto the trail. Area in front of the lift was not groomed or not maintained during the day. So, there were many bumps that launched you in the air. Not suitable for a (beginning) snowboarder.
Also, a sign at the lodge stated that 96% of the trails were open. That was simply not true At least 4 of the major trails were closed. Others had twigs coming through the snow, not a few here and there, but everywhere.
Finally, the conditions of the slopes were miserable. I estimate that 60-70 % of open trails were not groomed and they were a mess. I can imagine that you want to preserve most of the "fresh" powder, but if a trail is completely worn down the skiers/snowboarders, it does not make sense NOT to groomed it.
Conclusion: either close the mountain or keep it open, but put in some effort. This was amateur hour. Would not recommend this...
Read moreOvercrowded lodge and not friendly to outsiders or beginners. My family has skied here twice on Indy Pass and both times have left a lot to be desired. Seems like a great place for locals. I don’t think they should advertise and try to get outsiders to come to the mountain when they don’t have the resources to support them. The lodge is small and unbearably overcrowded. It’s impossible to find a place to sit and put your boots on. Or even sit to eat the food you buy in their cafeteria. The ramp off the one lift is very steep and the Greens down are fine but challenging and could be deceiving to a true beginner. The most recent day we were here it was a powder day and they were all bumped up. Again, fine for most folks, but not a true beginner trail if you’re needing one. The staff and locals aren’t friendly. Look at you like you’re the outsider that you are. Finally, every time we’re here they are having a ski race, so be prepared for some of the trails to be blocked...
Read moreFun place to ski with a lot of character and a lot of potential. The network of trails have a really nice flow and give you many opportunities to switch between them as you head down the mountain. I like that no matter which slope you take, they all drop you by the chair. Nice views from the top and the staff is very friendly. They have a great beginners area and plenty of options for the intermediate to advanced skiers. I am not a trick skiier, but the terrain park here is one of the best/biggest I've seen in the Northeast, and they seem to have a lot of local ski racing events, which don't really impact your time on the slopes but are fun to watch. All in all, I/we really like Whaleback and look forward to skiing it again and again, and also look forward to seeing it evolve/improve as the community/non-profit make investments. If you haven't been,...
