I have to say the beauty spot tops my chart for best views in the Appalachians. I've seen many balds in these mountains (max patch, Siler bald, wesser bald, wayah bald, Hemphill bald, and the list goes on) and this one is one of my favorites. It's only a short drive out of Erwin and about 2 miles of gravel road. We made it up in a 2wd sedan so it's doable in most vehicles and there only a couple spots that are bad. I had it to myself on a Sunday afternoon in June and to me that was unbelievable. Once you get to the parking spot, it only maybe a 10th of a mile walk. There is a dirt/gravel road that takes you right up to Beauty Spot, but it can get a little sketchy. I did it in the summer with my prius and didn't have any issues. Winter/Late Fall may present some problems for us low riding vehicles hahah. There is also a parking lot right off of the road (right before you get on the dirt road) that has a trail that takes you to Beauty Spot. Unsure of how long that hike is!

Read moreThe Beauty Spot is almost a hidden gem. I've officiated many weddings/elopements here because of the overlook of mountains, trails, and it's not always too overrun with tourists. A quiet elopement with just a few people is perfect without it feeling crowded. We saw no one else on the weekday morning but I've taken my kids on the weekend when it almost looked like a carnival.
