Very nice place! Slick Rock is placed in a beautiful naturally sculpted long curvy valley ordinate with many large smooth rock outcroppings, small sand beaches and several grassy plateaus.
The park is kid friendly, however this is an active wetland/river environment, along with very large smoith, wet sandy rocks that are incredibly enticing to play to on. Please don't allow this dangerous combination to be cause for harm it loss!
There a many wonderful packed sand and dirt trails along the river for a comfortable short family hikes.
Again- this is a river environment, so there are no developed jogging or bike trails (at least non in the main area). There are roots, soft spots, ruts, slick rocks... all that you should expect in a natural environment.
The trails are basically animal paths along the waters edge and back to the grassy knolls, they are NOT stroller or wheelchair friendly and are not going to be very easy for individuals with limited mobility and/or awareness.
Apart from all my doin and gloom i would say this is a top 100 place to visit for a picnic and maybe short stay... it is exceptionally beautiful, close to the boating areas and 20 minuted from Downtown...
Read moreFun place to have a picnic by the river very relaxing. Here’s Some Facts About The River The Kaweah River is a river draining the southern Sierra Nevada in Tulare County, California in the United States. Fed primarily by high elevation snowmelt along the Great Western Divide, the Kaweah begins as four forks in Sequoia National Park, where the watershed is noted for its alpine scenery and its dense concentrations of giant sequoias, the largest trees on Earth. It then flows in a southwest direction to Lake Kaweah – the only major reservoir on the river – and into the San Joaquin Valley, where it diverges into multiple channels across an alluvial plain around Visalia. With its Middle Fork headwaters starting at almost 13,000 feet (4,000 m) above sea level, the river has a vertical drop of nearly two and a half miles (4.0 km) on its short run to the San Joaquin Valley, making it one of the steepest river drainages in the United States.[4]:378 Although the main stem of the Kaweah is only 33.6 miles (54.1 km) long, its total length including headwaters and lower branches is nearly 100...
Read moreCome here during Winter or Spring. Its still nice during the dry season, but it's not as beautiful as the wet season. This place is the very definition of picturesque, and believe me, the photos do not do it justice. Pick a spot and lay out a blanket for a nice picnic.(Please leave the area the way you found it.)
There are 2 primitive bathrooms (port-a-potty). There is a day use fee, but no attendant collecting. You basically just deposit their pre-printed envelope in the bin with cash or a check, and then leave the stub on your the dashboard. Although, when we looked around, only 1 out of every 8 cars were doing that, so I guess they work on the honor system. We also spotted a black bear across the river, so you may want to watch out for wildlife when hiking. There is no diving in the river. I have seen kids with fishing...
