The Bolinas-Fairfax Road is a real adventure. We started from the Bolinas side. The first three and a half miles is harrowing, because the road is two way, but the width is one lane, and the unprotected dropoff on the bay side is deadly. We would advise the governmental entity responsible for this highway to install steel barriers to prevent human tragedy. When you arrive at the top, you are at a mid trail head for the California Coastal Trail. The next ten miles of road is two lane, but still a little arduous and brings you around a picturesque reservoir. People seeing you leave your dogs poo bag will confront you. There is no smoking, no swimming and you pup must stay on leash... No dogs in the drinking water. Read moreBon Tempe lake is beautiful in the morning. It has nice trails to hike and great views of the lake from different perspectives as you walk. Be sure to have a parking permit so you don't get a ticket & enjoy a peaceful visit. All sorts of wildlife from loons, ducks, herons to gobbling turkeys. We watched a coyote stalking prey in a small meadow by the waters edge on our last visit. Please be mindful of nature and pack out any trash you come across...
