Read moreI'm a lil plump and out of shape, so I will just say .... shewwwwweee those stairs! It's totally doable though and there are 3 rest spots along the way. Going down, totally not needed; but going up ....you might need 1, 2, or all 3 depending on your cardio capacity.
Don't feel ashamed tho cuz the view is worth it and so are the fun lil photos. Absolutely, do not use the bathroom in the parking lot. It's basically an outhouse and while I remember those from growing up in a rural area....the smell isn't so fun.
There is a clean and nice lil bathroom up to the left before you reach the visitor center... possibly a half mile from the parking lot, if I'm remembering correctly. It has a spot to fill your water bottle as well, so extra score.
The visit center itself is staffed with a very kinda individual who gave us some info and shared a lil story about the local raven who comes there to perch and preen!
As a lover of corvids or all sorts, I was so in love! There were some crows and another raven as well nearby. They're smarter than your average bear, so be kind to them.
Also lots of deer on the walk up, but meh we grew up with deer in our yard, so less of a win for me; but still absolutely adorable.
The steps down are a breeze even with not great knees, but yeah....take it easy and the walk back up is doable. Stairs are wide enough for people to pass for the most part and please stop and rest as much as you need to.
Lighthouse is only open certain days of the week...I wanna say Th-Mon. It was completely foggy, but still worth the lil walk to grab a photo with my long time friend who was in town.
Stop and buy a souvenir and look at the display inside the lil visitor center, if you're so inclined. Maybe you'll see a lil raven friend as well, while...

Built in 1870, the lighthouse was constructed to aid in the navigation for ships navigating the perilous waters off the Point Reyes Headlands, which are often shrouded in dense fog and strong currents.
Visitors to Point Reyes Lighthouse are treated to a mesmerizing view of the ocean, and on clear days, you can see detailed panoramas of the surrounding marine landscape. The approach to the lighthouse is itself an experience, involving a descent down 308 steps on a steep staircase that hugs the cliffside, providing dramatic views of the crashing waves below.
The lighthouse area is renowned for its wildlife viewing opportunities, especially during the gray whale migration seasons, when whales can be spotted just off the coast. In addition to marine life, the region is a haven for birdwatchers, with many species of seabirds making their homes along the coastal cliffs.
For history enthusiasts, the visitor center offers insights into the lighthouse's operational past, the technology used in its operation, and stories of shipwrecks and rescues off the Point Reyes coastline. The restoration efforts have preserved the lighthouse not only as a piece of maritime history but also as a beacon that continues to draw visitors with its timeless allure and scenic beauty.
