This park is mainly from just inland of the trail to the water is the State Park. Signs are posted showing park boundaries, beyond that is private property. The trail circles the island and is wide gravel surface and has benches all around the island. I estimate it’s about 1.5 miles around the island. The trail is good for all ages and abilities and for the most part is pretty level terrain. Along the trail there are numerous access points to the shore area. The beaches are a bit rocky in places. Some shore areas are small secluded beaches or rocks. Some access trails to the shore have stairs and some pretty primitive trails that can be quite steep others fairly easy grade and crushed rock. There is limited parking area that fills up sometimes and you will need to come back later. There are no bikes allowed and pets must be leashed. There is a nominal fee per person to enter and park. It should be noted that for the most part you are walking on trail underneath the tree canopies and pretty shady even on a hot sunny day. There is usually a nice ocean breeze and you can hear the waves on the shore. You can see Fort Gorges in Portland Harbor and the Portland Skyline. The ocean is pretty calm around the island and very swimmer friendly and clear. In light of the recent shark attack quite a few miles north of here, I have not ever seen sharks around the island or heard of any sightings that I know of here. There are usually no seals at the island shore or have not heard of them being here, which are a shark favorite food. The waters around the island are inland from the real open ocean and are more of a protected harbor from the open ocean. Caution is always advised when...
Read moreMackworth Island State Park, located just off the coast of Falmouth, Maine, is a hidden gem for those seeking a peaceful, scenic walk. This small island park offers a 1.5-mile dirt trail that loops around its coastline, providing stunning views of Casco Bay and the surrounding waters. The trail is well-maintained, easy to navigate, and perfect for a leisurely stroll, with several benches strategically placed for visitors to pause and soak in the serene coastal scenery. A few short paths branch off to the water’s edge, offering closer views of the rocky shore and opportunities for quiet reflection. Visitors should make time to explore the Mackworth Island Community Village, and the nearby pet cemetery. These add a layer of character to the experience, making it more than just a nature walk. However, the park’s simplicity comes with some limitations. The lack of restrooms is a noticeable inconvenience, especially for families or those planning a longer visit, so plan accordingly. Parking is also extremely limited, and the park does turn away visitors when spaces are full, which can be frustrating during peak times. Arriving early or visiting during off-peak hours is highly recommended. Overall, Mackworth Island State Park is a delightful spot for a short, scenic hike. It’s perfect for those looking for a quiet escape, but the lack of facilities and limited parking mean you’ll want to plan ahead. Bring water, hit the restroom before you go, and enjoy this charming coastal...
Read moreThis is a very magical and positive place for relaxation and unwinding. Baxters school of the deaf resides here so do not enter the school grounds and don't bother them. The children as well as tourists make fairy houses along the island for recreational purposes. Keep the island clean, throw your trash away properly. It's a beautiful island, a lot of walking and woods but clear pathways with no safety hazards. Further into the path along the island there is a pet cemetery which is the governor baxter dog memorial. A lot of nature and water views. There is one bathroom in the parking lot and tons of benches through out the island trails. The island is one big loop, you won't get lost. Along the path they also have a huge swing that swings over a cliff, it's fun but be safe.
Walking around is easy to moderate with minimal hills. Family and children friendly. It's a free park but they recommend a small donation that helps towards the school of the deaf.
Overall, 5 stars. Peace and...
