My husband and I stopped by Edwards Store Historical Site on the way home from Arkansas. The store was opened by Thomas Edwards (believed to be a family relation) in Indian Territory around 1858 and operated as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route to California in 1868 when Thomas became the first postmaster in Red Oak. Today the site is under restoration, funded by the Oklahoma Historical Society. Access to the building is gated off but walking is still permitted up to the site through a pedestrian gate. There are signs and historical markers which identify the project and give a brief history of Edwards Store.
