I was actually born and raised in this area. This park is a major location for the war, having 1,000's of soldiers to be killed at this location. The hospital, that serviced all soldiers, both sides, still sits here, it actually have blood stained floors from actual soldiers. There is a small but nice rest/picnic area, there is a bathroom at the parks visitors center approx 1 mile away. They have a historian on site there that is EXCELLENT! There are civil war relics and a lot of interesting history at the center. There is a huge opportunity for growth to make this site better. Once a year they have a major reenactment. There are 100's of actors that come and camp out in tents in the fields. Wearing authentic uniforms, with horses, wagons, cannons, bugles and drums, it will take you back in time. There are 2 cannons on site. The nearest gas station or store is approx 10 minutes away. The nearest hotel or eatery is 15-20 minutes away. Its a really hilly and quiet...
Read moreThis was a beautiful hike - went January 2021. I feel like a winter hike is underappreciated - but they’re awesome. I had the park almost entirely to myself. Trails are wide & well marked although some were a bit muddy the closer I got to Saylers Creek. Lots of informational posts throughout the park regarding the nature of the battle which according to park information is the last significant battle prior to the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Terrain is stark in the winter landscape, but still beautiful. Well worth the outing- visitor center is open & has a nice museum, Ranger was knowledgeable & helpful- he gave me an awesome trail map which was helpful in navigating the park so I got the most out of my hike. Loved that you could get perspective on the battle from both the union &...
Read moreNever expected it too be so well kept and preserved! The visiting center had a lot if neat artifacts to look at as well as a extensive knowledge on the battle as well as surrounding battles. I think the greatest experience was visiting one of the houses on the battlefield which as used as a make shift hospital! When we entered the house you could still see blood stains on the floor from when surgeries took place in the individual rooms. Then when went upstairs we felt a little bit of a paranormal experience where me and another family member got very light headed and off balance but then when we went back to the first level we were fine crazy right but highly recommend ! Our guide was well informed and a great conversationalist. All in all, I'd come back to visit! PS: the views were...
