Be careful with the big flat rocks on the top of the falls...they are slippery. Tread carefully if you're trying to get across the water up top or get into the little part where people sit in the water right before it goes over...maybe hold onto the taller rock on the side or walk on l fours.. I saw a teenage boy slip and fall hard on his knee there..later my daughter and I both fell...both ok, but look out for that coating of slime on the large flat rocks.
Nice mellow trail walk from the parking lot to the falls. It stormed the night before, so I wondered whether it would be engorged with brown water. Nope...still pristine cool water on an 86 degree day. I brought sandals, but didn't need them to cross to the side with the best view...I walked over the path of stones carefully wearing sneakers and didn't get my socks wet...it looked like those stones had been submerged earlier in the day though. I climbed up the natural stone stairway to the left and changed into flip-flops to walk across the top of the waterfall. There was a nice crowd but not too much on a Tuesday afternoon in August. I could see how the place being filled to capacity on weekends could take away from the experience. My afternoon here was perfect... diverse groups of people of all ages just having free...
Read moreKilgore Falls is great. I've probably gone at least once a summer for the past 10 years. On the weekends it used to get very busy, so I knew to be there early because the parking lot is not very big. Why only 3 stars? Because in order to deal with weekend congestion they've implemented a parking permit. I didn't know that, but that's the way it goes, my gripe is more with the implementation. So I drove 45 min to be told that their reservations were full, even though at 9:45 AM, I could see only 5 cars out of the 28 spots filled. As of now, you can only reserve a spot by calling them Mon-Fri from 8am to noon. And there are only 30 spots available from 8am til 1pm. But somehow they can afford 3 park rangers or whatever they are to stand around and tell people that you can't enter the mostly empty parking lot because they are full, and that if you have your heart set on a waterfall maybe drive 2 hours to Cunningham Falls. I hope they figure out a better...
Read moreUsed to come to this place, but now they ruined it. Now apparently you need a permit that you have to get a week in advance to be able to go to the fall area. Drove by the parking lot and there's only 4 cars there. Guards at the gate will not you in. I see what they are trying to do and not have so many people going there. I believe they failed to realize that most if not all that go there, do not stay long. They go for a bit and they leave. There's only so much you can do at the falls area. So if you would of get there and the parking lot was full, all u had to do is wait a bit and someone would surely be leaving. People were always coming and going. If you have family or friends visiting from out of town, you might wanna skip this place. It'll be a waste of time. Or you could get one of those week earlier permits, and of course it'll rain on "your" weekend. Perhaps check out some state parks in Pa, definitely no mumbo jumbo...
