Excellent museum! You will enjoy seeing the large beautiful planes, the historical displays & all that you can learn here. The museum is under the loving & inviting care of Laci & Hallie; together, they bring the subject of air and the military in general to life. I had the honor of attending the grand opening of their newest exhibit, "These Final Hours," which is a commemoration of the final year of WW II. This excellent exhibit was well-prepared with obvious intense research; in it, you will learn all about the state of the world in 1944 - 1945 and just how many areas of it were in peril. Through images & accurate descriptions of the different war theatres, as well as period clothing, letters written by a serviceman while he was serving, reproductions of period newspaper articles & spotlights focused on several Arkansas servicemen, this exhibit really brings the viewer into the war in a meaningful way. I loved the section of the exhibit on the WAC, WAVES & WASP, which gave information on the women who served in the war. The projected image on screen at the beginning of the exhibit, on the Battle of the Bulge, sent chills down my spine; it touches you deep within to see this image of soldiers desparately fighting in the deep snow. The image with the snow flying down on them really gives you a sense of the difficulty these soldiers faced!
This exhibit is not just for adults! I saw a family with elementary-aged children, and they, with the help of their parents explaining things, got a valuable lesson on that time that cannot be gotten just by reading about this complicated war.
The museum also hosts regular special events (check their Facebook page!) and even camps for children. I highly recommend the Arkansas Air and...
Read moreThis must be a recurring thing with the rude lady at the front desk as the other reviewer said. I grew up right in West fork and Greenland and I always remember the old woman being mean at the counter but since then I've moved away and was visiting with my girlfriend and we really enjoy museums together. It's expanded a ton since I was a young teen but the service provided by the woman was awful. She said she'd be closed in 30 minutes and I told her it was OK, I just wanted to walk through and we wouldn't take long. She sighed and said fine. The museum itself holds a ton of pieces from airplanes to weapons and uniforms but nothing that will astonish you. When we were about to leave we were looking around the gift shop and she interrupted us and asked how we heard about the museum and I told her I grew up there and just knew where it was. I drove past it nearly every day of my life. "but how'd you hear about it?" again, "I grew up here so I just know where it's at" so she just scoffs and walks away. I can't imagine that you place getting a lot of business except when an air show comes through. I'm sorry we went to your...
Read moreWhat an amazing treasure we have located in Fayetteville! I must admit that I haven't visited Drake Field or the Amazing Arkansas Air and Military Museum since I was a child. I had the opportunity to experience the museum during the eclipse last week. Not only were they hosting an awesome free mobile skate event in coordination with the local skating rink, Starlight Skatium also located in Fayetteville, the Airplanes in conjunction with all the retired military equipment were a real treasure to experience! The building alone that houses all the priceless pieces is worth going to see. They don't build buildings like that anymore. I highly recommend visiting, You can go solo, or it's a great place to...
