Kanawha Falls is a beautiful, relaxing place with some excellent views. Unfortunately, many of the views have become overgrown like so many of our state parks. There are several overgrown trees blocking the view from the parking lots, and brush has grown up in between the trees, making it difficult or impossible to get to many of the views anymore.

I really wish our state would invest the money into the upkeep of some of the incredible views and overlooks our state has to offer. Unfortunately Kanawha Falls is becoming part of that list of previously amazing places that are becoming sub-par due to lack of upkeep and maintenance. It's still worth visiting, especially if it's on your way of you're traveling to Hawks Nest or the New River Gorge Bridge, but it's hard to tell how long it will be if it doesn't receive that much-needed...

The falls themselves are pretty and powerful but the park doesn’t receive a lot of love from the locals. People can fish from the shore. The shore line is littered with trash and broken glass. If you follow the tracks back you will come to what I called a glass graveyard. Broken glass littered the rocks all throughout. You couldn’t take Astro without walking on glass shards. Looks like people take glass jars, pottery, and bottles back there to smash and break them. Not the type of area you want to let kids free in as there is to much danger of the...

This and the local valley communities (Glen Ferris and Gauley Bridge) are some of the most beautiful places in West Virginia. I was born and grew up just an hour away in Charleston, but only got down here a few times in my life. Once as an adult. When I came back as an adult after having lived in other places, my jaw dropped at how beautiful the area is. It made me think about how much I took places like this for granted. In my mind, this is the official northern gateway to the New River Gorge National Park even though it's not technically...

The falls are insanely gorgeous. We went for a guided paddle boarding trip with Mountain Surf Paddle Sports off of this ramp and it was truly spectacular. The water is calm enough in this spot that you’re not fighting the current too much and you can really enjoy taking in the views around you. I did also see a family fishing so likely to be a good spot for that as well. Please be aware that there is quite a lot of glass littering the banks/beach area here. Make sure you’re wearing safe shoes.
