Outstanding example of what one family can do to conserve natural heritage and continuously improve it. Monty Powell bought the neglected land in 1991 and created a haven here. A small part of the forest is turned into a beautiful garden full of perennials, shrubs, a pond, and lots of greenery. The family generously opened the private garden to general public and that is how it is known as Powellswoods Garden today. Monty is very humble person and I initially thought he was a volunteer.
I visited on October of 2022 and then in July 2023 for a PNW native plants walk with a native trees expert. These were amazing experiences. There's a natural spring on the property and has amazingly tasting, cool water that one can drink straight from the source.

I stumbled upon this charming and intimate public garden nestled in the midst of Federal Way, and what a delightful surprise it turned out to be! The garden's serene ambiance instantly transports you to a different world, away from the urban chaos. A visit here is a must for anyone looking to rejuvenate their soul in the heart of the city.
The meticulous care and attention to detail that have gone into creating this green haven are truly commendable, and the variety of plants is astonishing. It's a treat for nature lovers and a peaceful escape for anyone seeking solace amidst the cityscape.
I got to run into their Garden Director, Justin Henderson, whose passion and dedication are clearly reflected in every aspect of this garden. His knowledge and love for plants are infectious, and he goes above and beyond to ensure visitors have an enriching experience.
