I was telling my wife after reading the story of this fort I never want to hear anybody complain that it takes so long for the government to complete any project again. 22 years and they never completed this fort. I will say it looks great all things considered. I love the history of this fort and the fact that it changed hands and never had a battle. I also find it funny that they never finished it. It is great that the state purchased asset when they did to preserve it for all of history. When we were visiting there they were having a ladies rendezvous so we spoke to some of the folks participating in that event. It was great to see all the people in their classic dress for the time that this place was built. If you're in North Florida I want to catch a bit of history of the state of Florida I was strongly recommend you...

Car admission $6 to the park, then its$2.50 to self tour the fort. Its a smaller fort than some out there, but interesting to visit. The construction of the fort which i believe they said was a quick one is more sound than most our houses these days. Like with many coastal forts you will see seashells in with the “cement as they use tend to use materials on site to construct. Inside the areas with the spiral stares is what looks like maybe a huge oven or something. In the middle of the wall in there it looks like built in vent, thats why i think its a oven/ fire area. Never seen it before. If you know what that space is please comment. The cannon guns were massive and able to rotate for different angle shots. Heres a...

Nice staff, nice but pricey gift shop (as expected), the fort took us about 45 minutes to explore. Although it is relatively small with only a 5-6 buildings, there are lots of hidden places to explore. Try going down a brick tunnel and see where it takes you. You fill find winding stairs that take you to the top and little brick rooms. It feels like you are sneaking around but it’s totally allowed. The fort wasn’t very busy when we went on a weekend which was a nice suprise. They have bathrooms and $2 coffee. Admission to the park is $6 a car and then $2.50 per person for the actual fort. after you are fine I suggest you go the the beach part of the state park and take a...

Why has it taken us so long to camp here? This park was great. We camped here, in the Atlantic Beach Campground, for 4 nights on site #18. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about this park, exploring the Fort, bike riding on the beach, bike riding the entire trail system, sunning on the beach, watching the sunrise, riding bikes along that beautiful moss draped, tree lined road. In addition, we explored the nearby area of Amelia Island, learned some history and enjoyed some food. We would love to come back in the cooler weather to ride our bikes longer on the greenway trail and kayak Egans Creek. We'd also plan our next visit for one of the events at the Fort.
