We are staying at Button Bay SP campground but there really isn't anywhere to swim here. The point has super slick rocks so it's very dangerous to get in and out and the boat launch just outside of the park entrance is filled with grass and lots of debris but has a fair amount of parking. They have the pool here but that's mostly for kids. Just know that it's NOT ideal for swimming anywhere on the lake from the state park. Also, site 48 is listed as a 'prime' site but there isn't ANY water view from here. Lots of overgrowth blocking the lake and the wooden stairs 2 sites down is NOT ideal for launching kayaks as there are many stairs and lots of grass once you reach the water. Our site is quite large but there aren't any trees between sites for privacy, it's all a very open concept and communal camping compared to most other VT St parks we have been to but we have enjoyed our time here and its nice to see all the kids playing, biking and laughing. It's quiet at night despite the open concept and we love the large sites for our camper. Some pros and cons but mostly pros. We may head to another park tomorrow to go swimming and kayaking and since we can do that for free using our pass,...
Read moreButton Bay State Park is part of the VT State Park system. Located on Lake Champlain in Vergennes, it is a short drive from Route 7.
The park can accommodate RVs and tents, and also has lean-to’s and cabins. All sites and structures are clean and well maintained. The central area of the park is open ground and provides RV sites for larger units, and also has a few prime sites offering a fantastic view of Lake Champlain. Smaller RV and tent sites in the wooded area provide privacy. Roads are paved and allow for comfortable walking and biking.
Although there is no power at any site, generators are allowed to run at specific times of the day. Potable water is available, and an RV waste dump is located in the central RV area as well (across from the bathroom and showers). Campfires are allowed and split wood can be purchased on the way into the park (please don’t bring wood from out-of-state).
A small beach is accessible from the park and provides opportunities for swimming, kayaking, etc. A boat launch area is adjacent to the park for...
Read moreStaying at nearby at beautiful River’s Edge cottages I hopped on my bike to take a ride around the area and came to Button Bay... I can’t say how it is beyond the front gate because as I pedaled up I was greeted by a young woman who was apparently enjoying the power of her position as gate keeper. I explained I was on vacation nearby and came upon the park while on my bike ride. She told me that it would cost $4 to pass through the gate. Not anticipating the need for cash on my ride and not thinking a person on a bicycle would have to pay to ride within the park I asked if I could ride the short distance to the water to take a peek and was told that the view was beautiful but I would need to turn my bike around and keep on going. Seriously rude and nasty but said with a big smile. Big fish in a little pond... lol!
Post note: returned to the park with my $4 a couple of days later. Very nice and well kept. Big fish was right ... views...
