STOP....and visit. As you drive north out of Yachats, you'll have a tendency to zoom right past this place, the turnout being quick and near a curve. But turn around and set aside an hour or so...for the measly $5 parking fee (we did see cars with tickets on them so don't skimp here, especially if you're planning on taking the short walk up to the lighthouse, or decide to stroll on the beach), you'll be treated to spectacular views of the coastline (this time looking south, which will remind you a bit of the coastline on Kauai), a beautiful beach to stretch your legs, and a quick walk to marvel at the bridge just above you, which has quite a history of its own. Imagine that before any roads or bridges were built, people would take advantage of the tides and then charge their horses and wagons on the sand in the hopes that they could make it across the ravines and creeks and back up the cliffs. But both the bridge and the lighthouse got built, it housing the largest Fresnel lens built in England (almost all such lenses were made in France) and remaining one of the brightest such lights on the Oregon coast. The walk up to the lighthouse is an easy one and you'll pass the gatekeepers historical home (quite large, really), and a small trinket shop with some interesting wines mixed in with the usual hoodies and key fobs. On the day we went, the lighthouse itself was locked, perhaps because it is now all automated and having an operator to run it is no longer a necessity. Bottom line is that even if you're not "into" visiting lighthouses, this is a nice deviation with much more to see than just a lighthouse...stop and read the signs scattered throughout your walk and near the bridge. The history of the place will give you a new appreciation of the Oregon coast as you make your way up or down the area. Whether you spend an hour here or just a few minutes, you'll find that taking this detour will be well worth...

Read moreIf you like cute little vintage B&B's this place is the place to go! We were late checking in on the night we arrived so we missed out on the wine and cheese experience, but we had just happened to bring our own and still enjoyed our evening. The house is beautiful with a guest kitchen area to utilize as needed and no need to clean your mess up afterwards (they take care of all of that for you, besides... you're on vacation)!! The lighthouse is just a little walk from the house and worth it to go see at night before jumping into bed. We shared a bathroom with one other couple which wasn't an issue. Everything was pristinely clean beautifully vintage from the clawfoot tub to the 4 poster bed. There is a bell that is rung in the morning to usher everyone to the dinning room to enjoy a beautifully presented 7 course breakfast and conversation with the other guests in the house. Our hosts were delightful and informative about some of the history around the lighthouse and life...
