This State Forest is incredibly easy to find and it's really close to Orlando. The Barr Street parking lot has plenty of room for parking cars. When we arrived there in the morning, a hiker was loading all of his gear from hiking that section of the Florida Trail. This is a State Forest and the fee box was taped closed due to Covid, they asked you to pay online. After entering the trailhead there are several different places to stop and see the river. There are campsites off to the left, reservations are required. The actual trail is a loop we did the left side first but it also runs along with the Florida Trail and can be a little confusing, thanks to the alltrails app we didn't get lost. We did run into several wild boar including a mother piglets. We didn't see anyone until we got to the back side which is the Flagler Trail unfortunately there was a lost couple of hikers. The trail back is absolutely beautiful because it is all along the river which is wonderful. The water is clear even though it is brown. There are lots of places to stop and hang out for the afternoon or have lunch and take pictures. The trails were all dry and easy to navigate. The trail signage is terrible, people have handmade signs to try to help but the trails are blazed which is good. While you are hiking you would never guess that your so close to the city! Definitely...
Read moreWe love hiking the Kolokee Trail from this trailhead, and it looks like many others do too! We typically do out-and-back on just the riverside half of the trail, since the white trail part of the loop can get a bit muddy after rain. In contrast, the riverside trail rarely (if ever) gets flooded out. Also, the riverside views are better. This trail is very well-maintained and well-marked, but there are some places with large roots and step ups/downs, so I wouldn't recommend bringing strollers. Bikes are not allowed. Also, dogs must be on-leash, but most are off-leash.
From this trailhead, you can also go towards Lockwood Blvd. This trail has its own unique charm, so I recommend this out-and-back as well.
Parking is $2, paid online. I recommend getting the annual pass for $45 because you'll be...
Read moreWhat a beautiful hike! We did part of the Koloke loop, going about 2 miles east along the Econ River and then back to the parking lot. The trail is often just wide enough for one person and is heavily shaded.
We walked down to the river bank several times to take pictures of some really beautiful trees and a few alligators. Most of the trail was high and dry; there were a few times - when we were on trail offshoots - where it got a little muddy.
We got there at 8am on a Sunday morning and hardly saw anyone; it was really quiet! We passed two well-behaved, leashed dogs, and saw about six people during the 2 hours we were there.
I cannot say enough good things about this trail. We will definitely be making this a regular stop for our...
