The trees and gardens are very pretty, but this isn't a real museum. The tour not only glosses over the subject of slavery, but actively pretends that it doesn't exist for the entire tour. If you're going to run a plantation museum, the absolute least you can do is communicate the actual history of plantations and slavery in your state.
The tour constantly harps on the idea that "the Wesleys ran a lumber mill on the land". The lumber mill was a plantation run using slave labor. There were slave cabins on site. The only elements that remain from the original plantation are some of the floors, walls, and windowpanes of the house. All the slave cabins were moved to a different location, but are simply described as "cabins", with no further mention during the tour.
Almost the entire tour shows off the unrelated late Victorian and Edwardian antiques in the house, which were acquired by the collector who purchased the house, and have absolutely nothing to do with the site or the house itself. The house in its current form is mostly 1950s-1960s construction. There is likely more interesting furniture in any antique shop in the area.
Pretty, yes. But not worth the price of...
Read moreWe love touring historic homes in the areas we vacation. This plantation and the grounds it is on we're beautiful. They don't let you take photos of the inside, but it was in great shape. They have lots of antiques is mint condition, which was impressive. Unfortunately the owner of the home in the 60's renovated the exterior and a lot of the interior. It is part of the history of the home which is cool, but I love me some Victorian architecture. The grounds are stunning, we loved the live oaks all over. The oldest one was over 500 years old! I am big into gardening and really appreciated how the grounds were kept. This would be a beautiful place for a wedding, they have a stage, dance floor, and screamed in shelter as well. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves historical homes or beautiful...
Read moreBeautiful gardens and guided house tour with antiques. Make sure you grab a flier at the entrance so you can read about the numbered trees/flowers. The tour runs every hour at the hour and filled up quickly even on a quiet day. Only 10 per tour but well worth it, arrive at the gift shop at least 15 mins early. The tour lasted about 30 minutes, includes one flight of 21 stairs. Great day trip for the kids. Watch out for ant hills! Pack a lunch there is no food or drink for sale on site. Water fountains and rest rooms available and in...
