This was one of the cooler things I've seen in recent parks travel. We were there late September and made two stops. In the evening (5:30ish) the salmon were jumping pretty regularly, 20 to 30 second intervals. The next morning around 10 or so we could see them all "queued up" in the lower pool, but they were not really attempting to run. I don't know if that's a regular pattern, but it was our experience. Water was running a little high and it didn't appear any were clearing the initial cascade, so perhaps they were simply waiting for better conditions. Regardless, considering the ease of access to this viewing area, I highly recommend making a stop if...
Read moreWe visited in the middle of October during the week, we basically had the place to ourselves. We saw several shoals of salmon at the foot of the Cascades. We saw many salmon jump out of the water (not up the Cascades though) it seemed like they were practicing their jumps before making their way upstream. This was a very cool experience for us. It was beautiful even in the rain. Not a lot to do other than just stand quietly and admire the beauty. Just a short walk from parking, trail was clear. There was a way to get down to the stream. There were no restrooms at this small spot parking lot was more of a turn in so be on the lookout or it will be...
Read moreThis is a quick and easy spot to stop on your way to or from Sol Duc! There is a spot to park on the road, and it's a quick walk to the overlook. We unfortunately didn't see any salmon running during our visit, but the view is gorgeous nonetheless. You can view the river from above, or take one of the paths down to get a closer look. The rocks provide a lovely spot to sit, though be careful as you get nearer to the water as they can be quite slippery! The salmon cascades viewing spot itself is free to visit, but be aware that there is a fee to enter the national park where...
