This is a mainstay camping and playing facility for our family. We enjoy the campground, and like to paddle kayaks on the lake. The area is very quiet and nice. Staff is friendly and helpful, facilities are nice. BEWARE: the water is contaminated due to coal ash from Georgia Power Plant Scherer, so don't drink it, (bring bottled) and I wouldn't eat the fish from the lake. Many homeowners in the area have suffered decades of mysterious illnesses and high rates of cancer. I don't think a day here is bad for your health, but apparently a lifetime can be cut short in this environment. Shame on Georgia Power, too, for refusing to clean it up properly, or pay any settlement to the families that have suffered from...
Read moreI was driving by heading home from an out of town trip when I spotted the lake. It's very large. As I was passing by I spotted a sign for Dames Ferry Campground and the gate to it was open. I quickly turned in was almost immediately in a parking lot right on a pier of lake. The water looked beautiful (an aqua color) and the breeze was perfect. I went there to take some pictures of the scenery and they turned out great. It was refreshing to leap out the car and walk onto the pier and look out over the water within 1 minute.
