Today was my first time visiting the Arapahoe Bend Natural Area and I loved it! The leaves are what attracted me to this spot in the first place and I couldn't believe how yellow the trees were here! There are a ton of little ponds you can walk around to, the trails are all super flat and easy so this is just a relaxing place to visit and hang out by a calm pond! I want to come back in the winter to see this place after a fresh snow! If you can catch the last of the leaves here before they fall to the ground, I highly recommend giving this place a visit!

My favorite place to see nature in the city. Has a nice network of short trails for walking or gravel biking among 4 gravel pit ponds. One of these trails is paved from the Harmony Transfer Center, which has pit toilets, to the east end of Horsetooth Rd. and will connect to the Poudre River Trail under I25, maybe by the end of 2024. The ponds are good for paddling in a kayak, canoe, or SUP, with access to the largest pond right on Strauss Cabin Rd. A good place to see water fowel, including great blue herons, ospreys, and sometimes eagles.

I've taken dogs for walks here several times and it's a great easy trail with varying pathways. Horses are welcome here too! Great for someone looking to expose their animals to different traffic including bikes, hikers, runners and of course dogs. If you go all the way around the reservoir it turns into a pretty nice ride taking around an hour and a half at the walk.

By mid-afternoon the main trailhead can run out of parking, but this is an in-town area with actual maintained dirt trails (for middle aged knees between hikes 🙂) and a relatively unobstructed view of the foothills and sunsets...for at least a bit longer. Work is underway to extend paved trails over to Zeigler Rd south of Drake, and into the area of the projected community park between Horsetooth and Drake Rds. No doubt there will eventually be much more-and better/safer-parking. But it gets very dark in this area on moonless nights, and with proximity to I-25, it does provide temporary "camping" for the unhoused or minimalist traveler. However, this can make the area to the southern edge, along Harmony and the park-n-ride, less than safe after dark. Another issue is the number of large trees that have been removed along the Poudre here. It must be affecting habitat as I've seen far less wildlife this past year. Avian Flu (in 2023 especially) seems to have wiped out many of the wild birds, including owls, bald eagles, and blue heron, that once frequented the area as well. A last issue is that the tree removal has made the nearby interstate seem much louder and more obvious/visible. So it's definitely not the wild place along the Poudre it once was, but it's still a decent daytime...

Arapahoe Bends provides several miles of walking trails with excellent wildlife watching opportunities and access to several large ponds and the banks of the Cache La Poudre River. Locals can enjoy fishing, canoeing, or horseback riding with great views of the Northern Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. Facilities included limited parking, portable toilets and access to the Fort Collins bike trail system. While surprisingly rural, the Natural Area is adjacent to heavily traveled Interstate 25 and traffic noise will spoil the experience for some. Photographers and artists will find great sunset and sunrise views from many of the trails. Additional trails are accessible at the northern end of the area where the Strauss Cabin site and Rigden Storage Reservoir are located. Common sights include White Tail Deer, American Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Canada Geese and numerous...
