Lookout Mountain Flight Park — Attraction in Fort Oglethorpe

On top of being one of the best hang gliding schools in the world, it's also one of the cheapest. Strike up a conversation with any of the staff, from the office attendants to the lawn maintenance guys, and they will give you tips learning to fly. Whether it's paragliders, hang gliders, or powered aircraft, pretty much everyone who works here flies something. Something about this place attracts rough-and-ready adventure junkies of all types, and if that describes you, you'll find yourself in good company.

If you're serious about learning to fly, be prepared to stay a while. It takes at least a week or two, and handling gliders is physically hard work, so plan on some rest days too. If you're on a budget, you can camp next to the airstrip, or get a hostel-style bunk for $20/night. More luxurious accommodation is available if that's your thing, but don't expect a Hilton Suite, as the flight Park is more like a summer camp than a resort. Classes take place at dawn, and private lessons are available in the evenings for an extra sum. Typically there is no flying at mid day, as it's more windy, and this leaves time to check out the park, study, or explore the beautiful city of Chatanooga and the vistas on Lookout Mtn. Lookout Mountain Flight Park brings you into a supportive community of just the best people. I dipped my toes in with the learn to fly $499 package and spent a full week here and could not get enough. I cannot wait to come back!
