Easy drive out of Devil's Lake and free admission is a plus. Climbed Sully's Hill which gave you a nice scenic view at 1,700 plus feet. However, climbing the 193 steps showed me how in shape I was. Fortunately, there are strategically placed rest benches on the way. The prairie dog town is ok if you have seen prairie dog towns before. If you haven't scene one, worth the visit since drive right through the middle and of the town. The loop for cars takes you through some plains and a lot of woods. Saw a heard of bison but no elk. (I understand that the elk are usually scene in the early morning or late afternoon.) A nice drive but expect some steep downhill driving. The visitor center is pleasant with some educational displays. Modern bathrooms and is surrounded by nice walking trails. Nothing real challenging on the walk except a few narrow spots. I nice...
Read moreBeautiful Fish and Wildlife site. The auto tour, White Horse Hill, and the animals makes it a worthwhile stop if you are in the area of Devils Lake. Only negative is the the visitor's center isn't open very much.
A few notes: There is an accessible trail about a quarter mile long with signs for children. Best way to hike is clockwise. All the trails, save for the overlook, start near the visitors center. There is not much parking by either the Devils Lake or White Horse Hill overlooks. But both are worth waiting for. Preserve includes both elk and buffalo/bison. I have stopped by twice and the most recent is the only time I spotted either (and luckily caught glimpses of both!) As with other wildlife refuges, there is an automatic gate the prevents entry during...
Read moreWe were hoping to see more wildlife, but the only animals visible were a small herd of Buffalo in a fenced area. It was mid-June and we did see a calf also. We climbed the LONG stairway to the lookout platform. There was a working telescope and open areas visible as well as the woods. No animals were out in the meadows. So... why 5 stars? The visitor center is big, has a wonderful display of taxidermy, had a friendly and knowledgeable volunteer staffing the center, everything was clean and well cared for, and it was free. We bought a couple of souvenirs (they are reasonably priced). There is a donation box also to help fund the preserve. I recommend going in the evening as the lady there said the animals are more active then, and you'd likely see...
