The grounds are nicely landscaped with mining equipment placed all around. The gift shop has a lot of neat items. However, the short elderly woman behind the counter was inexplicably rude to me. She was nice to the people ahead of me which made it strange. Then they required ID to use a credit/debit card. This is actually a violation of the merchant agreement. Disappointing that they cannot follow the rules and demanding ID does NOT reduce fraud. It was nice to take an air conditioned bus in the summer to see the pit and the mill. However, I know they use temp agencies to provide tour guides and drivers rather than pay knowledgeable people a decent wage/provide benefits. The info they provide is good, but don't expect the guides to be experts in the field like a docent at any other type of...
Read moreStumbled upon this gem by accident. We were welcomed by the lovely young lady in the gift shop. I believe her name was Amber? She was extremely helpful and kind. My husband is hard of hearing and needs things repeated often. She didn't blink an eye and smiled while doing so. She told us about the Discovery Center and all of the things to do there. From a guided tour to the mine, to a self guided tour with a video, museums ( indoor and outdoor) as well as a giftshop. She is a wonderful sales person as well. We spent a few hundred dollars on unique copper gifts. I truly hope that she sees this, so she knows how much she mattered to us. We highly recommend stopping here, it is a true gem. Next time we plan on doing the guided tour of the mine and definitely...
Read moreI wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The gift shop had cute "junior" miner clothes. I got one for my nephew!
Also, I got a photo with a real sized haul truck! Those things are huge and could probably crush a car no problem. It amazes me how much they are able to transport in the mine from day to day. The solar panels are neat and it was cool to hear about the sustainability projects with solar power going on with some of the mine land that isn't used any more. The building has its own panels but I guess there are other panels somewhere that contribute to Tucson's power.
Overall, it was an educational experience to see how copper...
