When I first moved near Barr Lake I went into the nature center and was sort of disappointed. However I went in again last week and the 10 years in between have changed a lot about this center. The staff were awesome, everything was meticulously clean, and the area set up for bird watching is fantastic (like legitimately in love with it). There is a small gift shop with a nice selection and some maps, there is also a bathroom, and a couple pets, such as a rabbit, chicks, and a toad. Read moreSuch a great place to start your exploration of Barr Lake. There is couch to sit on that overlooks a bird feeder and some bushes for those that aren't as mobile. A kids section with info on the birds and other animals found in the state park has educational activities as well as outdoor themed toys for younger kids. The volunteer on duty when we visited late in the day on 3/24/19 was incredibly helpful in setting us up with an annual Park pass and was getting help from a park ranger to ensure all customers were served before the center closed. Read moreI would rate this as One of the hidden gems in Denver. It is around 30 miles drive from Denver and easy to find on the google maps. There are different entry points of this state park region, do not follow the apple maps, you might end up at a wrong location. The lake is Amazing, has boating, fishing and picnic areas. It is surrounded by natural trails for a walk or run. You will also encounter some wildlife and birds around the lake. Sunset views will blow your mind. Highly recommend this lake for a day trip.
