4+ hour drive from Phoenix with wifey and the 2 puppers didn’t disappoint. Spent 7 days at Rainbow Campground and couldn’t;t have asked for a better de-stresser. Be warned, there little to no mobile reception here but that suited us perfectly for the week away from the Phoenix heat and jobs. If you’re into hiking this areas is amazing! It rained everyday on and off. The camping gods were smiling as we setup camp with no rain and everyday we walked or hiked with the dogs we dodged a deluge by sometimes mere minutes. Rolling thunder and lightening was amazing and a real treat. Once day we spent the day reading most of the day listening to the sounds of the rain drops hitting the camper…sheer bliss of a day and just what we needed. Read moreSo 4 stars for how beautiful it is. Truly amazing how big it really is. Not very deep and sorry but fishing was lousy. I used power bait, several (lost) weedless lures lol in the weeds while shore fishing. Then rented a boat the next day, had 2 break down but as I laugh typing this, I still enjoyed the scenery as I had to walk almost a mile in soaking wet muck boots and socks with my gear after the first time lol. Read moreIn the past we have really enjoyed Big Lake. The temperature is cooler and the trout fishing is great. We have caught some of the biggest trout out Big Lake that we have ever caught. If you don't own a small 4-6 person boat one can be rented from the General Store. The staff at the Big Lake General store are very nice and will share their knowledge on fishing conditions if you ask. Big lake is very popular on holiday weekends, so get up there early.
