Our old and outdated GPS took us to an entrance that was closed. That’s nobody’s fault, but when we called the number on the sign, we were told we had to backtrack all the way to Roswell, which was ridiculous. We found our own way to the correct entrance, pulled up to the visitor center, but couldn’t go in as there was a large rattlesnake blocking the door. This was the theme of our visit. Every pull off and scenic view was occupied by at least one rattlesnake and a ton of mosquitoes. We couldn’t get out of the car save for one area. I’m guessing this is a time of year thing and we should have done better research but nothing I saw mentioned an abundance of rattlesnakes in early August. At least the visitor center was actually open, whether anyone could get to the...

Bitter Lake NWR is an awesome place for wildlife viewing and well known for its dragonfly diversity. This place is a magnet for migrating birds. Depending on the time of year there are a ton of waterfowl, cranes, and shorebirds that are easily seen from the comfort of your car with a binoculars or spotting scope. If hiking is not your thing the auto tour route goes around a large part of the property and offers ample viewing opportunities. There are also several nice easy trails that are readily accessible from the road. The visitor center is very nice with some very informative interpretive displays. All of the volunteers I have encountered are very helpful and knowledgeable. Definitely worth at...

Full disclosure : I am a volunteer here but my review is honest. People come here to see the dragonflies and the wide variety of birds both local and migratory. The most awaited migration is the sand hill cranes. There is an 8 mile loop where you may see dragonflies, birds, snakes, horned toads, coyotes, and other "critters". The reserve is a wonderful way to introduce kids to the great outdoors with viewing areas and trails to explore. The visitors center offers a wide range of information and a short film about the reserve and the migration. Facilities are clean, staff and volunteers friendly...

I spent almost 6 hours today experiencing the refuge. I started at the visitor center where I was met with a warm smile by one of the refuge volunteers. The visitor center has many displays that deal with the flora, fauna and geology of the refuge. After that a 20 minute movie about the refuge and the huge number of dragon and damselflies that occur here in the summer. Next I drove the 6 mile wildlife viewing loop looking for birds. For a break I walked the 2 mile oxbow trail. They tell me the refuge is spectacular during fall bird migration. I will definatly put a fall visit on my travel agenda.

The name is completely misleading!!! Please don’t claim to be a refuge for wildlife, a safe place for birds & varying animals to exist then post signs relaying it is perfectly acceptable to hunt & kill the very same beings you are presenting. Either offer a place of refuge or not but do not claim to be a safe place then advertise & allow them to be killed. The place was beautiful & It’s unfortunate to be tainted by such cruelty & suffering. Change the name & educate yourselves on what the term refuge actually means.
