My favorite section of the South Kaibab Trail is between The Tipoff and the Kaibab Suspension Bridge. Working the cancellations, I usually get a couple of nights in a dorm at Phantom Ranch twice a year. I always spend my free day strolling along the River Trail between the South Kaibab Suspension Bridge and Silver Bridge. Hike west along the River Trail. The River Trail turns into Bright Angel. Hike west a little farther, until you can see the Kaibab Bridge and Silver Bridge. Great spot to catch the Sunrise. I spend most of my day right there soaking up the sound of the Colorado River, watching the rafts go by, talking to fellow hikers, eating lunch and enjoying life. Leave No Trace!

It’s hard to describe how amazing places in the Grand Canyon are. You have to be there to fully appreciate them. It’s generally not recommended to hike to the river and back in one day but it’s totally doable if you’re fit. Though I would not do it in summer! We hiked to the black bridge and back in 6 hours in early March via South Kaibab trail. For reference we regularly hike in the mountains and run 5 times a week so judge your abilities carefully and don’t hike in hot weather. The lower you go — the hotter it gets.

The Black Suspension Bridge is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, is the point of crossing the Colorado River, connects the South Kaibab Trail and North Kaibab Trail, close to the Phantom Ranch, and is an important waypoint of the Rim-to-Rim hike. Not to say how exciting to see the bridge during the grueling R2/R3 hike, the bridge itself is majestic. The mighty Colorado River below changes color frequently, from muddy yellow to dark green, depending on the rainfall upstream.

I crossed this bridge in 1947 when I was 10 years old. It is one of the most memorable things in my life and I will be 85 years old this next April. I think that they have changed the bottom of the bridge because then you could look right down through the boards and see the river. It was brown and very fast. This was before they built the dam that changed the river. My Dad and I got almost to the north rim but the snow was so deep that we could not be sure of the trail and turned back. We slept on the trail in our sleeping bags for three nights. Once at the camp just after the bridge and once at the top near the North rim and once at Bright Angel camp on the way back...
