This canyon is an absolute treasure! I’ve never in my life thought hiking up rocks would be so fun- I’m beyond happy I stumbled across this gem. My boyfriend and I went for a couple hours and had a blast looking at the giant canyon walls and beautiful rocks in between. There weren’t many people at all as there are many paths and trails all over the place (we’ve only been to this specific spot so far) so that was nice, especially for a Saturday. There was one family we crossed, a few teens, and one or two single adults. It’s not a slot canyon or anything so even if it does get crowded I’m sure there’d be ample space. There wasn’t any water, waterfalls, or streams during the whole ‘hike’ except for the start of it (you basically hop over a few rocks laying in some water), but we didn’t go as far as we could either as there was a giant boulder blocking the way so I can’t be 100% sure of what was ahead. I’m not sure I’d bring my dog here as it seems like it could be hazardous, but other than that I’d recommend this place to any person looking for something new and fun to try.
I do wanna add I saw a couple people said in reviews to for sure wear hiking shoes, but I completed this wearing my Etnies skater shoes without a single problem. If anything, make sure you go to the bathroom before starting...
Read moreAn absolutely beautiful, hidden gem. The color of rocks is entertaining in itself. There were 3-4 groups of rock climbers when we arrived. Although not climbers ourselves, this might be the place to give it a go. Temperatures were definitely cooler than valley temps (above 90°).
Fairly quick to get to from Utah County (within an hour). Reading through other reviews made it easy to find, but Google maps also got us there as we did not lose cell coverage until we entered Box Canyon itself.
After a few hundred yards into the canyon we encountered the first of several big conglomerate boulders. That first one was easy enough to scurry around. The second one was just big enough, and awkward, that I went by myself another few hundred feet beyond that. Then the boulders began getting bigger and harder to scramble. I turned around to hangout with my family again. Even though we cut it short this time, it was still different enough we will be back to continue exploring and consider family...
Read moreI've been here a couple of times. It's a great hiking spot. It would be a great spot to take kids. The narrow canyon starts about 20 feet from the road. During the warm months expect to see climbers working on the really hard routes in the canyon. During colder months expect to see ice climbers and people rappelling. In my opinion Box Canyon is one of central Utah's hidden gems. Totally worth the drive!
For the climbers: great roof climbing. The routes are all fairly difficult (5.10 and up). The conglomerate gives a very different experience climbing than anywhere else I've been in Utah. I believe that most if not all of the routes are the routes are bolted sport routes. There are also some multi pitch routes. If you're not comfortable on roofs, conglomerate, or 5.11+, I'd recommend going further...
