We visited here last year to hike while staying up the road at River Island. Had a problem on check-in and the staff were super helpful and friendly and got the issue taken care of. Like all AZ state parks they do a good job of landscaping. They also have a cactus garden and in the middle is a desert tortoise enclosure. There are two new "Little Libraries" since last year. One by the store and the other by the pet area. The little library used to be in the store. We were here 3 days (Fri-Mon) and the store never opened. They don't have hosts here, maybe that is the reason? (There also were no hosts at Lake Havasu SP). But like all other AZ state parks, maintenance is poor. Bathrooms and showers are dated, worn, dirty, and haven't been updated since they were built in the 70's. Hard water deposits show that they are not properly cleaned. Paint is worn and peeling. Mirrors are worn. I went into one bathroom by the tent area and had to put my full 200lb weight against the door to get it to open. Then when I left I feared I was going to have to call 911 because I had to use both hands and put my foot on the door frame to get it to open. It is a safety hazard. It's a metal door and temps were in the low 100's so it probably expanded into the frame but that is something that should have been considered when they built it. The other bathroom with the ADA shower has a handrail that someone spray painted but they didn't mask off their work so there is silver paint that was over-sprayed onto rocks and sidewalks. Most of the outside lights don't work, including in the pet area. Many of the signs around the park have become faded and worn and many are unreadable. The boat ramp has collapsed and is permanently closed. Signs direct campers to launch and recover boats at River Island. Picnic shelters at all the tent sites are new since last year. On the morning we left a construction crew showed up, looks like maybe they were going to repair the boat ramp. Park was noisy with boats racing at all hours of the day and night. We camped at Buckskin Mountain State Park in...
Read moreI have to give this park a five star rating. It is beautiful for sure and 99% of the staff are perfect. However they have one bully on staff who should be removed. Pulling away from my campsite two of my tires touched the dirt as I pulled out of the way in case someone needed to pass. My stop would’ve only been for about 10 seconds I had forgotten to shut off the water to my RV. The bully came up and immediately accused me of parking in the dirt and gave me a long winded explanation as to the rules etc. I tried to explain to him that I was only shutting off the water. He wouldn’t stop he kept rattling on about my parking in spite of the fact that I was not parked I was only stopped and two of my tires were touching the dirt. Ironically the person across the street from me parked on the dirt every day I was there. His fifth wheel was too big to provide room on the pavement for his truck and RV so he had no choice. To keep from losing my temper I told Mr. bully that I would never do it again and for that he let me off with a stern warning. What a jerk, he marred my experience at the park and ruined my day and continued on his way. When I inquired at the gate about his behavior I was informed that “that’s just his thing” I noted many many people parked slightly on the dirt and the reason for not being able to park in the dirt seems crazy as in various ways people were camped in the dirt parked in...
Read moreGreat riverside camping. We stayed during memorial day weekend. So we got to see this place swing in full force. There are a large amount of "rustic camping" spots l, where you pull in and pay at any time, day or night. Many reserved sights that fill up fast, book a year in advance. We were able to stop here last minute and grab an open spot right at the river. And there were at least 7 other open spots.
So plenty of room. Also you can back your trailer or rig up to the tent sight and set up the trailer in the parking space. What ever vehicle fits in your space you can use there. $35 a night for these spots, plus an extra $15 for additional vehicles at your spot.
Reserved sights are around $50 a night? Pirates den is right around the river bend, and there are plenty of restaurants around that area if you don't want to cook Last but not least, they have full public bathrooms with showers. Multiple buildings along the riverfront. Cleaned daily. It's a little weird not having a full door but it's camping showers y'all know how it is.
All in all, this is our new favorite spot. I highly recommend sitting at the riverside in the early hours of the morning, and watch the rooster tails come off the powerboats, the way the sun shines in to them is magic. A rainbow appears if the light hits them right. Especially with the cliff as the backdrop....
