My family has a membership to the Botanical gardens so it's become a tradition to go to the Gardens during the holidays. We've gone to Halloween Lights (off York) and Pumpkin Festival and Corn Maze (Chatfield). We always enjoy ourselves but I would say the Pumpkin Festival is very crowded so if you don't like waiting in lines to get your kids face painted or wait for a ride or get something to drink then come early or don't come at all.
I was not prepared for my first Pumpkin Festival, we came in the afternoon of the second day of the festival and it seemed like the pumpkins were ravished and not many were left. It didn't help that a frost/freeze had happened the day before so many were rotting and unusable.
We did manage to find a couple to buy, the purchase of the pumpkins are by weight. We went to the festival first and picked a pumpkin on the way out. However, there were people who brought their wagons for kids and pumpkins (smarter people than I) and also a pumpkin babysitting spot, so you can pick your pumpkin, drop it off and pick up on your way out. Don't worry, its manned by pumpkin watchers!
Bring a hat, sunscreen, snacks and your own drinks...its allowed and cheaper than the concessions available again people smarter than I brought these things and looked so much better prepared and happy.
Everyone at any of things events are generally happy but you have prepare yourself for a crowd and lines.
Come to enjoy family time and be polite to others.
If you are holding a spot for your kid in say the face painting booth while he or she goes to see the ponies then park your wagon to the side and move up appropriately when the line moves, don't change lines if you see a gap in another line and if your child isn't there when you're next don't hold the line up, let another child who is there go ahead of your invisible child.
We went to the Corn Maze AFTER the Pumpkin Festival which still had the pony rides , the bouncing area and the train rides. My grandson, did the train rides both visits and loved it. During the Pumpkin Festival it was too crowded to wait in lines for the bouncing area but during the Corn Maze weekend he got in there without a long wait.
There is a kids Maze, larger adult Maze and Maze at night. We went to all but the Night (scary) maze. I thought it OK, not too crowded but even the larger maze isn't that large so you aren't in danger of getting lost. The maze was dried up, I'm not sure if it ever isn't dried up but that made it easier to see through so I don't know, it's nice for family time but your not going to have a Harry Potter moment where your like "which way do I go?! Oh NO!" I have a 4 year old Grandson and we were able to spend time with him and take some pictures. Again, good family time away from the TV and...
Read moreOurs was not a typical Botanic Gardens visit. We attended the 2022 Chatfield Farm Pumpkin Festival and Corn Maze, leaving at the end of the day with an autumn glow, fully pumped for the Halloween holiday.
Even though we didn't walk the actual garden, I'm giving 5 stars for the incredible effort that obviously went into making this family friendly event such a smashing(pumpkins)success.
We had 3 generations in attendance and each found an abundance of smile-worthy attractions.
The Corn Maze was our first destination. If you haven't found your way into - and out of - one of these marvels, you gotta give it a try! The "prehistoric" theme inspired the creators to mow the outlines of elaborately detailed creatures and the all-caps word PREHISTORIC out of a massive field of corn stalks. After entering the maze, you could easily wander for hours through the greater-than-head-high shoots. You'll encounter dead-ends, roundabouts, and multiple routes on your journey. It definitely helps if you snap a picture of the Maze Map before you dive in, or better yet, print a map before leaving home and trace your route to the exit ahead of time.
The Festival also offers authentic hay rides(tractor-pulled!)and a vendor-filled concourse with hand crafts of every persuasion, as well as your typical fair-inspired food and drink.
Free face painting, a wide variety of blow-up play structures, and a child-friendly magic act keep the kids happy. And come to think of it, happy kids keep all of us entertained with delightful giggles and squeals, and...
Read moreI don’t want this to be a reflection of the gardens; as I’m sure she was only staffed for the Trail of Lights, however my first time being here was a total bummer. Had tickets through work to check the lights out, have a nice little coworker date, and it WAS beautiful. We laughed and had fun. But all of us had a horrible taste in our mouth the entire time, overlapping into today. When you pull in I guess there is someone checking you in, or more just asking if you have tickets, and to yell at you and start your experience horribly I guess. Now, when pulling into the incredibly dark entrance, someone was pulling out so I did not see a person approaching from behind the other persons vehicle. This woman frantically came to stop me, to which I apologized immediately, expressing I hadn’t seen her behind a large vehicle. She proceeded to legitimately yell at both of us in the car about how hard her white car was to see, and to pay attention. Rude but ok. Tell her we have tickets, and that the car behind us is with us. She yelled at us to “just go. slow down”. Now I get having a rough day or something but to have this be your response to not one, but 4 cars of people isn’t okay. One of us was on the verge of tears. Thanks to the sweet lady that checked our tickets after we got in the gardens, she had 5 visibly upset humans just venting about the experience. But seemed visibly upset we were so berated, and helped make the rest of our night a positive one. Do your job but don’t be...
